The why, what, and how of blogging

JUL26

This post deals with why one should have a blog in the first place, what in a blog that would make readers identify with the content and how to make these readers come back again.

So, what is a blog anyway? Blogger in its quick tour defines a blog as: “ a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world.” What is even more interesting for us in this particular context is the next quote: “Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules.” What one can conclude is that, on the one hand, blogs can be about anything you like. On the other hand, blogging is becoming so widespread and versatile that it is becoming more and more difficult to convince and get potential readers to come back to your blog, unless of course you start thinking about what will make your blog unique and genuine. This is what this post is about: Why should one have a blog in the first place? What can I put in my blog? and how can I make my readers want to visit my blog again?

The answer to the first question is obvious: There are, in fact, as many reasons to blog as there are people over there: people talk about their tastes in fashion, literature, food, music or discuss issues pertaining to their day-to-day problems , politics, education, economy, etc.. the second and third questions do overlap as what you are going to talk about and most importantly how you are going to do it ( your personality, the originality of your point of view ) will be deciding factors on whether readers will come back again. First impressions are the clue: If you are careful about the content you are presenting and what your readers need to know, this will make a good impression on them and hopefully bring them back. This is a great article on bloggertalk that is a well-rounded guide on what to write on your first blog (N.B: the article’s location may change as the site references articles by page). There is also a plethora of articles about best blogging practices from the experts.
